What you should know about spyware

The best way to prevent programs from running at Startup
is from within the programs themselves. There is usually
a Preferences or Options menu item that will present an
option to start automatically.
The problem with MSCONFIG is that if the option is set in
the program to autostart at boot-time, the program may
just put another entry in MSCONFIG . . .
You can also look in the Registry. However, the Registry
is not something to be trifled with as simple mistakes can
prevent your system from booting. Educate yourself FIRST.
(Look in Help & Support, search for Windows Registry).
These are the two most common places that programs start
from:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersio
n\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion
\Run
You can also look in Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del), under
the Processes tab and get the program name and search for
it in the Registry. If you are uncertain - STOP !
Changes made to the Registry are implemented (for the most
part) immediately. And yes, it is normal for SVCHOST to be
running multiple times under the Processes tab.
Good Luck !

>I have tried removing programs from the start menu using
msconfg. this appears to be only temporary. I need to
permanentlycremove those programs that are on the startup
menu that slow down the boot up that I don't use
frequently.
