My successful hard drive cloning

Those of you who have been reading (and bypassing)
my saga which started as FIXMBR.... might want an update.

I made a clone, finally, a working copy of my Master HD.

Since I want to do this every month, I decided to repeat
the steps which seemed to lead to success, on a new drive,
simulating what I'll be doing on June 30th.

I disabled ccapp.exe from my Start-up menu....that being the
only Symantec-related call. Then I used Drive Image 7, in its
"Copy one Drive to another" mode, not its Drive Image mode,
and right from the installed software, not from the Install
disk/PQRE.

I copied it to a newly formatted drive, set empty and
Active and Primary. I copied With MBR.

After it completed, I put the clone in Master (only)
position on the cable, jumpered it as Master or Single,
and booted up. It came on fine, and except for the fact that
I'll have to switch back to Normal Start-Up, so that ccapp.exe
runs, I have what appears to be a working clone of my Master
Drive. It seems to me that it was not Microsofts anti-piracy
tactics which stood in my way for a matter of weeks, but
something of that sort in the Symantec Norton System Works.

Now if somebody wants to follow in my footsteps, I hope
I've described it completely. And if somebody wants to tell
me exactly what ccapp.exe is for, I'd appreciate it.

and data

I use Ghost clone option and clone the master to the backup.

Both boot, I change the Bios setting.
When I install new software, I clone just before the install.

Then if the software works I leave it, if not I do a system to system,
backup to master disk copy with Ghost.

Works great.

Been doing this for 5 years.

Full disk clone is under 30 minutes.

That makes so far two responses telling that Ghost
does exactly the same sort of thing as Drive
Image, and I'll keep that in mind. But it must
have been just me and not the Ghost, because when
I tried Ghost about a year ago, I just found it
hard to make play. I'll keep it in mind, and thanks....

Well done , perseverance has paid off in the end :-))
Symantec KB has a detailed description of the whys and wherefores of CCapp.
As I understand it enables the starting of antivirus and email protection at
an early stage in the boot and this has been baulking the copy process.
There is another program which would probably also interfere with the copy
process and much else. This loads at an even earlier stage than CCapp so
early in fact that it stops CHKDSK /f from running . It is of course the now
infamous version 5 update of the otherwise excellent Zone Alarm
firewall.Earlier versions work just fine.

Your copy method provides an instantly available replacement for a failed
hard drive. If you had chosen to use Image instead of Copy you would have to
do a PQRE restore to the new drive before you are up and running again. I
prefer the Image method because it takes up less space so I have more than
one generation available at any time. The imaging runs in the background on
a daily basis to a separate internal HDD and weekly to an external USB HDD.
But each to his own :-))

Thanks, Richard and others......and thanks to the MVPs who worked
with me while we wound through the labyrinths to the solution.
By the way...."Copy drive" versus "Drive Image"....takes more
space, yes. But that's no problem at all, and I regard that as
preferable to the more circuitous imaging.

Funny you should mention that but yesterday I went to do my usual Monday
morning maintenance, and as it was the first Monday of the month I do a
defrag but when I tried it came up with the error that it wouldn't I had
to run Chkdsk /f first. I went into the properties of my C drive and did a
disk check with scan and fix any bad sectors checked. I didn't ask to run
from boot up but did it while in Windows, still couldn't defrag, same
message and I have the new version 5 of Zone Alarm Pro installed, thing is
so does my husband's machine and I could defrag that with no problem, any
ideas <g>

Thanks for the kudos, Joan. My saga went through many episodes, and
was very informative for me, and, I hope, via the thread, for many
other people. I bumped into a few walls, and several dead ends on
the way through the labyrinth, but the bottom line was, as you
read and I won't repeat, a straightforward procedure. The real culprit
for me, parallel with other folks' Zone Alarm, was Symantec's
"ccapp", which I'm sure is well-intentioned but seems to be what
was blocking my progress. I remember an old proverb:
"The road to Hell is paved.....with good intentions".
Funny that so many people complain so loudly about Symantec,
yet you never hear a peep out of them, to defend themselves.

I am not aware that ZA 5 gets in the way of defrag this is because, with my
page file on a separate HDD, I only have to run it very occasionally. It
does however get in the way of chkdsk for a system drive. This chkdsk with
the fix option set can, ASFAIK, only be run on reboot as the process needs
exclusive access to the drive. To avoid any actual or future problems with
Zone alarm a building consensus of opinion appears to be that the best
course of action is to follow the proper uninstall instructions and
reinstall Zone Alarm Version4.5. Have a look at the Zone Alarm site and
their notice boards for confirmation and how to's. ( not sure about that
apostrophe !)
