Problems Downloading DirectX 9 and Windows logo testing

Can someone please help, this is driving me mad. I'm
trying to download DirectX version 9 from the windows
update site and when i try to install it i keep getting '
The software you are installing has not passed windows
log testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP.
The software will not be installed' I also get exactly
the same message when i try to download basic service
packs and updates from the main Windows update site, so
i'm guessing its something to do with my computer
settings but can't for the life of me find out what. Any
ideas please !!!!
