View Full Version : Two questions about WinXP Home

Peter

1. Where are the Microsoft updates stored? Namely KB837272 which is no
longer in my add/remove programs list since I did a repair re-install.
Belarc Advisor says I need to reinstall it, but when I try WinUpdate says I
need Media Player 9 (I have it) and the update is already there (where?).
2. When viewing Macromedia Shockwave flash the page will disappear before
the object is fully loaded...what causes that? (As in the multimedia at
http://www.eternalegypt.org )

Hi

1. Have a look in the Windows folder for a folder named
$NtUninstallKB837272$ - the uninstall files are in there.

2. Make sure that you have the latest version of Macromedia's software -
www.macromedia.com

Thanks Will. the uninstall item isn't there, but further down there are logs
for it. What do I do, if anything?

Hi

If you click on that folder, then on the spuninst sub-folder do you see
spuninst.exe? If so use that for the uninstall.

Re: the Macromedia stuff... according to their test I have the latest Flash
and Shockwave installed, but the link to authorware doesn't work so it would
seem I can't download that for now, not sure I need that anyway. The other
thing needed for that site is Apple Quicketime and I have that too. Things
worked fine before. Maybe the site has a problem.

Hi

In that folder is there a spuninst.inf file? If so right click on that and
select Install. A 'Repair' install would normally warrant a re-download &
re-install of all Updates. have you been to WU since you performed the
'Repair' install?

Yes I went to WU and that particular update wasn't included in the list.
I'll try to uninstall it if I can find it. Then try WU again.

Another observation, I just went to my Quicktime player to look at movie
trailers. The page showed for a brief second and vanished, just like the
Multimedia pages I talked about.

That's where I went. The download starts then a pop-up appears "This update
only applies to MP 9.0 (which I have) or the update is already installed" I
guess I'll just ignore it for now.
Any further ideas about these pages appearing and disappearing? Any other
factors that might cause it (ad blockers, etc.)?
