View Full Version : Lost Desktop

I'm having trouble getting my desktop back. To understand
the issue, I'll give a quick (I hope) history.

I was trying to set up VPN for work on my home computer.
I have DSL and when I had trouble connecting after
installing it (it hung on "connecting...") I played around
with the local area connections. I even tried to create
a "bridge connection" which was a major mistake, but I
think I got rid of that.

Well, I got to a point where I was able to get to
a "blank" screen (no desktop) and was able to do a control-
alt-del to get to the task manager. I created a new task
and ran the VPN setup again which detected that VPN was
already set up and asked if I wanted to uninstall it. I
uninstalled it and it got rid of that "bridge connection"
so I thought I was good to go. When I rebooted I go
directly into "windows" but still, I get only a "blank"
screen (my wallpaper) but no start menu or icons.

I've tried just about everything I can think of. I can
create a new task and open a DOS window, Word, MS Money,
but I can't get to Windows Explorer or get my desktop
back. I found another forum that said to right click and
do a "show desktop" but when I right click I don't get a
popup menu.

If anyone has any ideas how I can get my desktop back I'd
really appreciate it. What gets me is that I can run some
applications but not explorer.exe. Oh yeah, I tried
bringing up the "control panel.lnk" but no dice.

Post a reply or send me an email, but PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks,
Glen

Try

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 195 (right column) "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar"

Install the fix, then reboot your computer.

Thanks for the try, but I can't install the fix because it
doesn't recognize VBScript. I went through and tried to
update the registry manually but this doesn't seem to fix
it either.

If you have any other suggestions I'd definately try.

Thanks again,
Glen
