connectivity

Hello all,
i would like to know how to connect 2 computers together.
1 is running win Xp and the laptop is running Win 2000.i
do not wish to purchase 2 network cards, so can i simply
connect thru a cable and if so which one?will i need any
software for this and can i just view the other comps
files or actually make changes and control that screen.
