View Full Version : Lost key

I know you guys have probably heard this a million times,
but I lost my product key! I have the cd of course, and
even the retail box it came in, but the jewel case (with
the key) is no where to be found. I have purchased 3
copies of Windows XP, one was the upgrade for my main pc
at the time (the lost one) and 2 OEM versions. My husband
inherited my main computer when I bought the new one, so I
reformatted it, ran the installation, and when it came
time to input the key...YIKES!! Couldn't find it. He's
running ME now, and I'm losing my mind (can't get our home
network to function properly. What are my options besides
buying another upgrade cd?? It kills me to have the cd
sitting here and no way to use it. Anyone? Is there anyone
I can call that can help me???

Thanks for your time.

Don't look for a jeweled case. It does not exist. The product key is on a
cardboard product sleeve.

There is a utility I obtained from PC Magazine called, ViewKeyXP.exe. It
will give you the CD key for Windows XP.

Either search www.pcmag.com or indicate your email address and I will attach
it.

If you had to taken the time to actually read what was written in the OP and
not replied to what you THOUGHT it said, you would not have wasted all of
the readers time.
Here is what she said " so I reformatted it". Now how exactly will view key
help her?

Perhaps you should not waste my time by adding your frivolous comments. Why
do you presume that anyone has wasted time to read my message; there was no
intervening message to indicate anyone has read it except you.

In any case I was trying to be helpful thinking that maybe she had another
PC with the key in it that could be read. Who knows whether anyone else
could be helped by my tip. You sound like a one-thought, close-minded type
of individual that I don't care to deal with. Buzz off.

Ahh shucks, I hurt your feelings. Maybe my comment will make people stop and
rethink what they write to make sure the info is actually helpful or
accurate. Your posting was an example of what happens when people think they
will be helpful, are actually giving inaccurate information which
potentially could harm a computer. I know in your case this would not have
happened, but stop and think the next time before you reply.
1. Did I properly understand what was actually what was written?
2. Is the question an area that I really know the answer to?
3. Is my answer accurate and helpful?
4. Before posting answer, re-read the question once again so I know the
answer I am giving is really for the question asked.

Try contacting MS. Of course they may charge you but at least it won't
look as if you pirated it.

If you have the proof of purchase then you should be able to call Microsoft.
