hello, i need to buy a new cdrw player for my hp
pavillion, and i was wondering if you could tell me the
ins and outs of buying. we usually play multiplayer games
online from a cd, so perhaps you could tell me which cdrw
to buy. i am looking for something inexpensive. thank you,

If you have access to a Circuit City,

(may wrap - paste the sections together in your web browser's address line)
This is a Lite-On 52X32X52 drive. It lists for $70 US, but it has $55 in
rebates this week. (I dislike rebates, but I manage to overcome my dislike
long enough to send them in.) $15 (or more like $20, with sales tax, after
the rebate) is quite a good price for this drive.
Lite-On is known for good cheap drives. The 32X12X40 Lite-On drive I have
seems very reliable. (It came in a Cendyne box - by the way, avoid any
residual Cendyne products on the shelves, as the company just went out of
business.) The price on the above drive tempts me to get a replacement,
although there's not much point. (I wouldn't use the 32X RW capability.)
One warning: a drive this fast probably won't be quiet, at least when it's
running full speed.

Spam dodger may be in use. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I bought one of these assuming I could use it on my system
as it's designed for Windows XP. However, I can't get it
to work. I've recently upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows
XP.=20

Hello,
Got it w. XP and no problems.
I'd reboot and access the BIOS, redetect all drives, accept (if) any changes
and reboot normally.
If NOT found by the BIOS, I'd suspect a faultly IDE connector cable (or
connection), wrong jumper setting on the drive itself (master, slave, cable
select???)
If still NOT "ok" for XP and detected in Bios, then goto: Start, Settings,
Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and Hard Disk Controler and
check that the DUAL IDE channels are configured properly for the system.
If OK in previous move to CD drive(s) (if present at all) and delete any
outdated entry(ies).
If no correct CD Drives at all listed ( after previous steps taken care of):
Shutdown and reboot to XP.
Goback to Control Panel and get XP to redetect your periphs: Add New
Hardware.
