Modem

Hi. I have started to use WinXP Home. I have an external
modem. It works fine most of the time, but sometimes it
dissapears off the Device Manager list. To retrieve it I
must first switch it off, run "Scan for hardware
changes", then switch it back on, "Scan" again and it
reappears. There appears to be no pattern to this but I
guess there is! Any ideas? I have been thru'
Troubleshooter with no difference being made.Cheers,
