PLEASE!!! Can someone please tell me how to disable the
touchpad on my laptop? I have already followed the info.
on setting up a hardware profile for docked/undocked
laptops, but it does'nt say how/where the touchpad is
located in the Device Manager - to disable this touchpad
and use my portable mouse when the laptop is docked.

I would greatly appreciate any help on this as it's
driving me crazy!

I found some info. that said hold F10 to enter the BIOS
config are, but F10 does nothing on Evo n610c startup and
F8 does not seem to supply the relative functionality to
disable????

A 5 minute search of the Compaq support site, now part of HP, revealed this
document which should contain the info you require.

http://wwss1pro.compaq.com/support/reference_library/viewdocument.asp?countrycode=1000&prodid=5430&source=PS020723_CW01.xml&dt=3&docid=9877

You may need to copy and paste the link.

In case you have difficulty with this procedure here is the info copied
directly from the article -

"The method for disabling the internal pointing device depends upon the
Mouse Device Driver used. For example, the Synaptics TouchPad Device Driver
is unaffected by the BIOS F10 Setup setting to Enable / Disable the device;
other Mouse Device Drivers obey the BIOS setting.

If a mouse driver is installed other than the Synaptic's Touchpad driver,
e.g. Microsoft Mouse Drivers, the touchpad/point stick can be
enabled/disabled via F10 BIOS setup.

1.. F10 to enter bios setup at boot time
2.. Advanced
3.. Device Options
4.. Dual Pointing Devices
5.. Use arrow keys to select the pointing devices you want enabled
6.. F10 to save settings
7.. File-Save changes and exit
8.. F10 to confirm
If the Synaptic's Touchpad driver is installed touchpad/point stick can be
enabled/disabled via the mouse properties in the control panel applet.

1.. Start
2.. Control Panel
3.. Mouse
4.. Device Settings Tab
5.. Select the device and click on the enable or disable buttons. "
BTW The issue is, in fact, *not* OS specific.

Hope that helps
Pete

Hi Pete, thanks but I've tried this yesterday and it's
not possible:

a). F10 does not do anything at startup on the Evo N610c.
F8 does bring me to a config menu but does not have the
options specified below.
b). Disabling the mouse, from the mouse properties in
Control panel, diables both the touchpad and the external
mouse! I need the external mouse.

Any other ideas?

Best Regards,
Rob

The implication from the article on the Compaq support site is that, when
both the touchpad and external mouse drivers are installed, the hardware tab
in the mouse properties should show both devices. If that is the case then
you should be able to select only the touchpad, then disable that device via
the device usage menu in the relevant properties box.

hope that helps

Hi Pete,

That makes more sense of course. However, my only driver
is the "PS/2 compatible mouse" for Device Type: Mice and
other pointing devices. Where can I get an external mouse
driver from, as a single driver, therefore allowing me
select either the all pointing device driver or single
external mouse driver?

I tried installing the mouse again, but it still lists
the driver above as the only option.

Cheers,
Rob

Rob

You seem to be looking in 'device manager' rather than the following the
sequence described in the article -
With the external mouse installed open 'Control Panel', then (if in Classic
View) 'Mouse', there should be a hardware tab with both devices listed. If
Control Panel icons are in Category View then the sequence will be 'Control
Panel', 'Printers and other Hardware', then 'Mouse', 'Hardware' and double
click the touchpad.

If this still does not resolve the issue, or if you cannot find the separate
devices there then - Assuming you have the Synaptics Touchpad - you may
want to install the updated drivers for the touchpad from the Compaq support
site.

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/EvoNotebook/us/family/model/4215.html

Select your appropriate OS and download the relevant file (6.4Mb). When
installed that should give you a reference to the touchpad which you should
then be able to disable when required.

Hope that helps
Pete
