View Full Version : Can't install RAM

I haven't poked around much inside computers, but I did add more RAM
to my old Win98 machine with success. Can't figure out where things
are going wrong with my new XP computer.
My two-month-old emachine came with 128MG DDRRAM. This morning I got a
256 bar of 184 pin Azen DDRRAM that had been on sale at Future Shop.
It matches the specifications in the motherboard booklet, fit in the
slot and both clips went up. No chance of putting it upside down
because of the slot at approx. the 45% point. When I turned on the
computer, I heard beeps - one beep, then three, then three again, then
one. Nothing on the monitor, which stays black and blinks as in
standby mode.
I've tried changing slots with the existing memory, putting the old
memory by itself in the second slot (worked fine), also removing the
old memory altogether and putting the new memory by itself. Same beep
pattern, no picture.
Is it likely that the memory is a dud, or is there something I need to
do with XP? Not sure how I can do anything if the monitor won't
respond.
Thank you.

There are RAM specs that go beyond the pin count and slot
pattern. You need to check the full specs required, you may
have ECC RAM and the motherboard used by eMachine probably
doesn't support it.

It might be a dud or it might be just the wrong memory
for your computer. Go to http://www.crucial.com and
use their memory configurer to find out precisely what
your computer needs. I've never heard of Azen. I
would recommend returning that module and buying
what Crucial recommends.

Thanks for your response. It turns out that emachine has an online
tech chat area. I posted the Future Shop URL to them, along with the
problem. The tech said that he thought the memory on the FS website
should work, but that it might be a bad stick.
Crucial's website mentions PC2100 memory for the T2240, and the Azen
memory (and the Future Shop ad) says PC266. My son says he believes
there isn't any difference. That's the only area I've seen that
appears to be different.

Your son is right, but PC266 is an old name for it and
not used much any more. I'd sure go with one of the
major brands, among which are Crucial, Kingston, and
Corsair. These companies have a long and well-earned
reputation for reliability.
