Hi all, i made a mistake by updating my generic WinXP "Primary IDE
Controller" with something called "esdi ide/itapi..." (not sure on the
rest).
The thing is, i can't uninstall or disable it now! I want to put back
the generic Primary IDE Controller (and Secondary IDE Controller) but
i am unable to.
Does anyone have any advice?

Under Device Manager you should be able to "roll Back" to previous =
driver

I tried that, but the rolled back driver is one i don't want. And i
don't have the uninstall option on that either.
But i have made some progress. I updated my primary driver to
something that was incompatible with my system. After a reboot this
brought my machine to the "Windows cannot start due to a hardware
issue....blahblah". From here you can choose "Boot to last good
configuration"
Instead of choosing this i put my winxp cd in the drive, hit
alt-ctrl-del and booted into setup off of the cd. I then went as usual
to reinstall windows (in the vain hope the repair option would appear)
and it did! Instead of wiping everything with a clean install, i just
installed winxp over the top of my current install. This meant i lost
no data or installed apps (although i did lose all my winxp updates).
My IDE drivers were back to the way i wanted and my burner was working
again. It is still in multi-word DMA mode 2.....but i can live with
that as it doesn't really affect the burning speed.
