View Full Version : No "Security" Tab on Printer Properties, But I Am an Administrator

Howdy. I'm trying to share my locally-attached printers
on my XP Pro machine with a Windows 2000 machine across
the room. The W2K machine can see and use my printers,
but cannot change the properties of those printers. When
I looked up the problem in Help, it said to select
the "Security" tab in printer properties. I don't have
a "Security" tab. Help says if I'm an administrator,
the "Security" tab will appear. When I go to User
Maintenance, I can only select "Computer Administrator"
or "Limited." I selected "Administrator" for my account,
but I don't have a "Security" tab on printer properties.
What did I forget?
Thanks.

Hi,
I understand that you are unable to find the security tab in the printer
property page.
Please check if the 'simple file sharing' is enabled. In XP Professional
'simple file sharing' hides the Security tab.
1. Please open 'Printers and Faxes' page and select Tools -> Folder Options
-> View.
2. Then move the 'slider' to the bottom and, if there's a line that says
'Use Simple File Sharing', uncheck the box and click OK.
3. Now you can right-click on your printer icon, select 'sharing', and
there should now be a 'Security' tab.
Hope the issue is resolved.
Thank you,
Rashmi

I appreciate your help. There's still a problem:
I got the "Security" tab by following your directions.
Thank you.
I have two printers attached to my HP deskop. I can see
the "Security" tab from the local machine. I can
manipulate the properties of one of the printers (HP
DeskJet 990), but I cannot do so for the other printer
(HP Photosmart 7760w).
The security settings of both printers are identical, as
viewed from their local machine.
I cannot find a setting that's different for the 7760,
compared to the 990. Do you have any suggestions?
Mike

Hi,
Could you please describe me what you meant by 'cannot manipulate the
properties for the printer'?
Are you trying to change settings such as paper size, tray etc.? Was it
working fine earlier?
Have you tried reinstalling the printer drivers? Also please check
modifying the properties in safe mode and check if it helps.
Do let us know the status.
Thank you,
Rashmi
