I've searched far and wide for an answer to this one and
have found others with the same problem on the web but no
solution yet. Suddenly my open programs do not show up at
all on the taskbar. If I minimize a program, the only way
to get back to it is to alt-tab or open the task manager
ctrl-alt-del. The answer is not group similar programs.
Would appreciate an answer from someone who knows.

Tom, there was a thing going around on the internet - an electronic
postcard that requires downloading a little something to view it. The
results of the download were missing buttons on the taskbar for
minimized programs. Symantec has an article about it at their site:

If this does not sound familiar, try booting to safe mode. Does the same
thing happen here to your taskbar buttons? If no, then take a close look
at what is running at startup. Use System Information> Software
Environment> Startup for a detailed list.
