FMON.EXE is related to Text and Languages I think it may have been that I chose a language to be installed so I could read a websites information that there are 2 instances of the CTFMON.EXE file in the "View a list of Microsoft Software on this computer
".

There should be two. One in the windows\system32 folder - this is the
working copy. The backup copy will be in windows\dllcache
OR in Windows\ServicePackFIles\i386.

If the working copy becomes damaged or accidentally deleted, it will be
automatically replaced. System File Protection will copy it from the backup
location and to the windows\system32 folder.

s seem odd though that there are 2 of the same file listed in the Microsoft software list both dated the same date . I read on the Discussion Group that Windows XP removes unused drivers and other software if the software is not needed or used for a while
. Is that true ? I wondered whether Windows XP would remove the duplicated entry of the CTFMON.EXE file in the List of Microsoft Software on my computer. Thanks for the reply , Nicholas

These are not two of the same file. The names are not even the same.

The prefetch item is a *reference* to ctfmon. The reference is used by the
"optimization" routines built in to XP and used when you run disk
defragmenter.

You read the XP removes what drivers and software from where? Prefetch? If
that's what you mean - supposedly yes. Unused or uninstalled items will
eventually "age" and drop out of the prefetch data collection. Note that it
is also possible for them to hang around a bit longer than the software or
drivers that they represent. However since these are just references, they
take up relatively very little space.

The two files you have mentioned are not duplicates. You do not have two
ctfmon.exe files. You have ctfmon.exe and you have a prefetch reference to
ctfmon.exe.
