Hello,

J.Kay you seem well versed in most problems, so here's a
unique one I haven't managed to find help for anywhere
(incl. Microsoft website) :(

I am running Windows XP Professional, with SP2 version 2096
(which might be the problem, but the bloody thing won't
uninstall...well it is beta software after all) and MSN
messenger 6.2.0137.

The problem has occured recently, I *think* they started
occuring before I installed SP2, not entirely sure though.
I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Messenger many
times, with the same problem happening anyway.

The problem is as follows:

Sometimes, more often then not when I am in a message
window, or viewing a webcam (it doesn't seem to matter
which), the window I am in starts acting up. The blues
sometimes meld in with the text box of the window, the
outlines of the buttons all disappear, or sometimes the
buttons disappear completely, leaving only the button text.
Other times big patches of white cover the sent text
window, so I cannot read what the person has written. Or
white patches over what I am typing, and they are typing...
When I type, the writing comes over the top, but the window
is all a mess.
This happens on full screen mode, and windowed mode. Also,
in full screen mode, if I am in a browser or window,
sometimes the msn chat window's bottom half appears in the
window I am currently in, which is annoying. It even does
it sometimes when I am in the chat window, showing the
bottom part of the chat window twice in parallel.

On full screen, sometimes the message window clones images
of parts of the taskbar, and I can see them on the top of
the window as images only though, and not clickable.

In addition to this, the Messenger contact list loses all
its icons, leaving a plain text list of all the contacts I
have and whether they are online or offline in brackets.
Sometimes, when trying to get to options in either the
message window or in the contact list, the menu and outline
of the window/list goes black, and when choosing an option,
I cannot see anything but a grey box or a black box. I can
guess where the 'next' button is and click it, but the
following window also comes up in just grey or black (for
example in video/audio tuning).

Whenever any of this happens, if i minimise then maximise
the chat window it fixes itself, for anywhere from 1 second
to 1 minute on average. NB the contact list stays stuffed
unless I close MSN and re-open it. And then the problem
still occurs later on anyway.

I have asked users what versions of msn messenger they have
been using, with most being the latest version and running
Windows XP.

As I said above, I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling
more then once, with no luck.
I have to revert to using Trillian half the time, just to
get rid of the problem. Trillian has no problems like this,
but I cannot use the webcam facilities with Trillian so it
is a nuisance.

I can forward screen shots if necessary.

In the past it has been fine, it has only begun to happen
in the last 10 days.

My system specs are AMD Athlon XP 2000+, 512MB 2700 DDR
RAM, Windows XP (5.1 build 2600) SP2 2096, running on a
13Gb Quantum Fireball, with an additional 120GB Seagate
drive running some of the virtual memory. Graphics card
currently installed is a Matrox G450 (I haven't had any
problems in the past with it), and DirectX 9.0b

Any help would be appreciated!

James
