When I shut down XP my computer wil not shut down
automatically.

It used to shut down with Win98SE

Maybe you upgraded your OS from win98SE to XP. The same thing happened to me when I upgraded my Win98SE to Win2k, or even when installing sp2 for Win2k. I did a clean install of Win2k and everything was fine.

See if the info at http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm helps.

One quick hit that seems to fix this for many is to enable APM. Open
Power Options in the Control Panel, go to the APM tab and check the
option to Enable APM support.

Go: DeviceManager/Check what flavor of Hal*.dll XP installed:

ACPI Multiprocessor PC: Halmacpi.dll
ACPI Uniprocessor PC: Halaacpi.dll
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC: Halacpi.dll
MPS Multiprocessor PC: Halmps.dll
MPS Uniprocessor PC: Halapic.dll
Standard PC Hal.dll

If it is "Standard PC," it does not have the ACPI capabilities, obviously;
If your PC is ACPI, install the correct Hal*.dll file from your WXP CD - try
a Google search for "Hal.dll install"
Also, try this one fore more options:

Hope this helps,
Michael

Maybe you have a uncompatible driver or program running..
try unticking startup files using msconfig and try again
