hi,
i have a big problem and i don't know what to do.
it started yesterday after a year of not having problems at all.

the problem is that i hear my hd shut down, and after 5 seconds
my winxp got stuck.

i checked for viruses, and i have the latest winxp update, i scaned for
the bluster virus and my hd is set to "never shut down hd" in the power
managment options. Additionatly i disabled the caching write to the disk.
oh, and i have the maxtor 6L040J2.

i'm clueless, what should i do?
thanx alot

Hard to say based on limited info... Some things it could be:

1) Turning off of hard drive after X minutes in CMOS would over ride OS
settings.
2) HD is overheating - could be that air circulation in your system has
deminished causing HD to shutdown due to heat.
3) PS is starting to go bad - current is not adequate/stable causing
drive(s) to turn off.
4) HD is going bad - internal motor for plate rotation is hanging up or
spinning down due to friction or component ware.
Needless to say, this is not an inclusive list! There are many other
factors that could potentially effect your system not even directly related
to the HD. There may be other HD issues (ie power cable from PS) that I
haven't included.

These are some thoughts, maybe others will add more.

Good Luck,
Len
