View Full Version : Desktop Icons

I'm running XP Pro on a Thinkpad. The desktop icons
rearrange themselves whenever I boot up and often during a
session. I'm not using automatic alignment or align to
grid.

Can you point me to a solution?

Thanks,

Frank

Frank, other than installing a third party program created for the
purpose of remembering specially placed icons -- I've never found a way
to keep the desktop set "just so." Some people never have a hard time
keeping the half the icons on one side of the desktop and half on the
other but it's never worked reliabley for me.

Instead, I use the regular Arrange Icons By.. and let them line up at
the left. If I want to group shortcuts, I create folders for related
items. Also, the Quick Launch toolbar has become my favorite for my most
often used programs. Rarely start programs from the desktop anymore.

Sharon,

Thanks, you've released me from my compulsion to solve the
unsolvable problem of making my icons behave on the
desktop. I seem to remember that an earlier release of
Windows didn't have this problem and I have spent too much
time trying to fix it in XP. I will follow your advice and
get back to productive computering.

Thanks,

Frank

You're welcome, Jim.

I remember when the icons were more well behaved too. Maybe that's why
we never give up hope that they'll do what we want once again? :)

Wish I could remember the name of the program that folks use to glue
those icons into place (a search on google would probably turn something
up). Never tried the program as I really don't want something extra
running just for icon placement but it works well for folks that *have
to have* those icons where they want them.

Enjoy your computer - no matter where those icons end up at.
