View Full Version : Need Printer Driver for Laserjet

Mort
December 5th 03, 01:24 AM
I have an HP Laserjet IIIP printer which I have used for some time and
is in excellent condition.

I am now using XP Home which does not support this model. When
contacting HP, I was informed that they do not support XP with this printer.

Is there any way I can obtain a driver? This is a great printer and I
would hate to give it up.

Thank you for any assistance.

Try using the Win2000 Driver for this printer. If that doesn't work, then
try the generic HP LaserJet Printer Driver.
I know this works for some other HP printers but not sure if it will for
this one.

XP has a driver for the IIIP. If you need to manually install it, it's
located about
3/4 of the way down the list of HP printers. After the LaserJet 4,5 6 etc.

No, not true. I use a IIIP myself, and XP, both Home and
Professional, supports it just fine.

XP Pro has the drivers for that printer built in to the OS. Have you
searched the print driver list built into XP Home Edition? From what I see
on HP's site, Microsoft provided the drivers for LaserJet series III
printers.

I am greatful to all who responded so quickly. I was unaware that a
driver for the IIIP was included with the OS.

Since the printer is not Plug-and-Play, it did not automatically install
with Windows. I had contacted HP to request a driver, but was told by
Customer Service that HP no longer supported the printer and would not
provide a driver, so I felt that I had no choice and was preparing to
say goodby to a wonderful printer.

It would have been nice if they mentioned that it was supported on the
OS CD.

Thanx again to all who responded.

Why give it up when XP has the drivers built in?

I have three Dell computers using WinXP and HP LaserJet IIIP printers. I
can't remember if XP auto detected the IIIP on setup or I did it manually
but the driver for the IIIP is included in WinXP.

Exactly my point. Why should people be forced to replace prefectly
functional printers and other peripherals just becasue they are old? Not
everyone has money just to throw away, but I guess Donald Link thinks we do.

What the f is your problem? I never said that I was 'TOLD' to do anything.
I was just making a point that if one wants to update to XP then there is a
good chance that some older peripherals (HP InkJets in particular) that
won't be supported and that it's wrong that they aren't.

I mean really, you're going from NT 5.0 to NT 5.1 and suddenly hardware that
was supported suddenly isn't. I could see if it was a jump from 5.0 to 6.0,
but it wasn't, it was a minor upgrade release of NT.

I still think if you install an operating system which you know your
hardware will not work and then complain that it was not supported then you
have to be the next thing to a fool. Life is to short to punish yourself
that way. Do no change and stay with what works if hardware is that
important.

I agree, if you realize ahead of time. If you didn't realize ahead of time,
then you have noone to blame but yourself for not checking. The fact still
remains that the HP LaserJet IIIP *is* supported by Windows XP. That and
only that makes Donald Link's post nothing short or a stupid and ignorant.

That's why Microsoft publishes the compatibility list, so you can check
_first_ before shooting yourself in the foot.

Whatever makes you think that it's "wrong" to not support older hardware?

Because it takes nothing on the part of HP to provide XP drivers, they just
*choose* not to so that they can make more money off the sales of new
printers.

Also, the main question at hand in this thread was the LaserJet IIIP which
*is* supported and numorous comments to such have been made in this thread,
including some by me. I've also posted in this thread that if someone
didn't run the hardware compatability test first, then it's their own fault
for not doing so.

So what point are you trying to make here seeing that everything you've said
has already been covered??????
