critical updates

I have an hp with windows xp software specifically for an
hp computer. Can I down load the updates, or will it
interfer with my operating system? some hp techs say yes
some say no.

There is no specific Windows version. It is very likely that you have
a Windows version that is customized for HP computers. This may affect
what tools are included and what drivers are part of the driver
library. The operating system is the same so you can download and
install all the updates that the WU site offers.
