Foreign Disk containing part of a span

I've been preparing to upgrade, and one of my hard drives
that contained part of a spanned drive is now showing as
foreign. I can't import it without getting a message
saying I'll lose the data in the incomplete span, and XP is
apparently not recognizing that I already have the other
portion of the span installed (that drive also contains the
Windows partition, so I can't uninstall it as well). I
thought I saw a document saying I could delete the volume
on the installed drive and then import the foreign drive,
but this sounds a bit risky to me.
