I have run the disk cleanup function and have not
compressed the drive. If its relevant i am also on fat32
not NTFS.

Have you emptied the recycle bin? How about hibernation, is it enabled? Do
you have system restore at the default disk utilitzation setting? Any or
all of the above will effect the amount of disk space you see available.
