View Full Version : So how DO you get CD-RW working under XP?

I upgraded from Win98 to XP 2 weeks ago, and have not been able to get
my CD-RW working properly since. It is a Cyberdrive CW038D.

For a start, XP only saw it as a CD-ROM. I followed the instructions
in Knowledge Base Article 316529 to change the registry settings, and
it at least shows as a CD-RW now. But, even with that, I have never
seen the extra option for being able to erase a CD-RW from Windows XP
(I think it is supposed to be in the CD properties).

Even after reinstalling IN-CD (admittedly it is a fairly old version,
2.26.0) I have not been able to get the CD-RW working properly, or
consistently. At the moment, the options for formatting a disc don't
even come up - all I can look at is the INCD version information.
Yesterday, I was able to format the disk, but I couldn't write
anything to it - it displays one file on the disk called
"Non-Allocatable List" with size 0, but shows the disc as being full.
Its behaviour seems to vary from one disc to the next. I have another
disc, which I managed to write files to, but I can't delete or add
anything else to, now.

This device was not mentioned in the pre-upgrade compatibility report,
so it should just work. I have wasted far too much time on this. An
upgrade on a home PC should be much easier than that. Most of the
problems mentioned in the compatibility report were resolved quite
easily by loading new drivers.

Well, it sort of works again. I found that something (probably one of
the Windows Updates) had changed the registry setting, so that it was
a CD-ROM again.

When I say "sort of working", I mean it seems to depend on which disk
I put in first. If I put in a disk that I have previously written to,
it generally works ok. But if I put in a disk which hasn't been
written to, I don't even get the option to reformat it under INcd,
unless I insert the "good" disk first. Very strange, and I haven't
quite worked out which disks are likely to be good, and which bad, as
yet.

I probably need to get the latest version of Nero and InCD, but I want
to know that it will all work before paying the money. The newer
version of InCD doesn't seem to come with the demo version of Nero.

Well, it still doesn't work. Yesterday, I was able to format a disc,
but couldn't write to it. After rebooting I can't even format.
Any help or hints would be appreciated.

1) Try disabling XP's own burning software - sometimes it will conflict with
3rd party (particularly old) burning SW.

2) Get a half way up-to-date version of Nero/InCD!

FWIW,

Try CD Creator/DirectCD 5+
or 6 Martin. A LOT easier to
use than using INCD or XP's
builtin CD Burning. XP's built
in burning is rubbish. It DOESN'T
support packet writing. And yup
disable XP's burning thru Control
Panel / Admin Tools/Services/Imapi
CD Burning COM Service.

I'm in Auckland, so I can send u
something if you like!

OK, I will look into it.

I gathered that XP's inbuilt burning is no good, but I have never seen
it working. It doesn't seem to support my drive, although the box says
it is supported by XP.

As for Nero, I have downloaded the latest demo version (Nero 6).
Although the web site suggests that the demo version is fully
functional, just with an expiry date, INCD doesn't seem to be included
in it. I have also been unable to get the backup working. It goes
through the motions, then just exits, without writing anything to
disc.

A URL for CD Creator would be handy, but I will have a look myself.

Ah it isnt free CD Creator Martin,
unless you plan on downloading
it and paying for it at www.roxio.com

CD Creator 6 (well the platinum version)
includes, directcd, label creator, photosuite
5, dvd builder, roxio player, sound/tag
editor, Drag to disc, creator classic
disc copier, media explorer, audio central!

There's a lot of programs that come with
this.

Yup, I think INCD can be downloaded
as a separate download from the Nero site.
(I've never used INCD only DirectCD).

But I do use Nero 6, for other things.

Trust me, I dont know why MS put
CD burning as part of XP. It wont even
let you format a CD properly lol let
alone copy files to the CD ( If people
dont know, how to write files to the CD)!

I noticed $US80 at that web site. An upgrade to Nero is much cheaper
(around $US30).

I haven't found out how to yet. I have emailed Nero asking how to do
this, and await their reply.

Well, as I've said, it won't let me do any of those things - it
doesn't even try to run.
