Hi
I have a brand new pc,i installed XP Pro, but when it
boots it gets to the XP screen and locks. I restarted the
pc in safe mode with command prompt. It starts to list
drivers to the screen and freezes again and the last
thing listed is:-
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system s32
\drivers\mup.sys
Any help please.
Regards

If you have another PC on which you can download SP1 and burn it to a CD,
once SP1 is installed on your new PC, this should solve the problem.
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
(the network install is the one you want)
However you're going to first have to get into your copy of XP... so it may
be that a Repair Installation will be needed first.

mup.sys is the last file to load before the gui starts. Something is
happening after that to lock up your box. This happens to me from
time to time; I just shut down the computer for about 20 minutes, then
restart it. The problem goes away and it boots normally. Go figure!

That is always the last thing loaded in safe mode, so all you can say is
that something has gone wrong during initialisation. =20
A boot to Safe Mode Command Prompt, or to the Recovery mode of the CD
and running CHKDSK /F *might* help
