View Full Version : MSM Messenger and Windows Messenger together?

Does anyone know if it is OK to use both MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger
at the same time in Windows XP Pro? Does it harm anything.
My computer came with both. I tend to use Windows Messenger, however, MSN
Messenger is also on my system and loads in the startup under MSCONFIG. So
can I keep both running and use either one? Or should I remove one?
Thanks!

Greetings Joe,
You certainly can, it does not harm anything and is designed to work in this fashion.
Although you can force both to uninstall, if you uninstall Windows Messenger, some
functionality in MSN Messenger and Windows itself will no longer work (Remote Assistance,
Whiteboard and Application Sharing).
You can however stop one of them from starting (don't use MSCONFIG however, as it will just
come back come the next reboot) -- just open the one you want to disable, click the Tools
menu, then Options, then General tab (in MSN Messenger) or Preferences tab (in Windows
Messenger) and uncheck the 'Run Messenger when I log on to Windows' or 'Run this program when
Windows starts' (depending on which Messenger).
