View Full Version : Weird Character Set

I had an error that gave me the blue screen of death. I
restarted and tried to bring it up in Safe Mode and other
modes and was unsuccessful. I was able to bring it up as a
previous working configuration, however right now what I
have on my screen is my correct desktop but the character
set with the names under the icons and in the control bar
is unreadable it is lots of rectangles, x's, question
marks, etc. I do not know what character set this is and
am unable to read it so I can't figure out what options
come up. Is there some way to try and bring the system
back up in safe mode to try and correct this problem?

The font, Marlett.ttf, is used to draw various window components such as
buttons. If that sounds like the element that is in disarray, use
MSCONFIG's "Expand" button and the XP files in the i386 folder to grab a
fresh copy. If you follow the steps presented on the screen, the tool
will replace the old copy in the Windows\Font folder with the new one.

If you have a regular WinXP CD, that folder can be found on it. If your
Windows was preinstalled, you may also have a copy of the folder on your
hard drive.
