View Full Version : XP SP2 Clarification for FCKGW corp edition users

Given the confusion generated by Microsoft product manager
Barry Goffe's gaffe (http://article.pchome.net/2004/05/10/19689.htm)
in mistakenly declaring SP2 open to all, the average FCKGW user is
left
wondering how to improve the overall security of the internet by
fixing M$'s defective products in spite of M$'s refusal to allow
them to do so.
Apparently, the bottomline is that SP1 blocked 2 registration
numbers, and now SP2 blocks 20. But the keygen approach used
in SP1 to defeat this remains workable using new keygen files.
Which leaves only the question of whether or not Goffe 'took the
package',
and is now spending more time helping his kids with their homework,
when he is not working on his golf swing.

Microsoft has worked out the 20 most pirated product IDs and SP2 will
not install and run on any copy of XP bearing one of those numbers.
"The situation at the moment is that we will block those," he said.
It is unclear what effect this strategy will have in countries where
much of software used is illegal. For instance, the anti-piracy
Business Software Alliance estimates that 92% of software in China is
pirated.
Mr Randle said Microsoft was keeping its SP2 strategy under constant
review.
"Whether it will change between now and launch I do not know," he
said.
Service Pack 1 for Windows XP worked with almost all legitimate and
pirated versions of the software.
Only those copies of XP that used the two most widely pirated product
IDs were barred from getting the upgrade.

I would favor SP2 examining a hard drive for known, pirated (corporate)
version of Windows XP, then proceed with an instant reboot
and reformat of the hard drive, afterward displaying a message stating:
"You may now install a "legal version" of Windows XP!

I would love it! Because like PA gives erroneous errors, so would your
little scheme, and then MS would be formatting legitimate user's
computers, and the only people would be truly screwed by it would be
those that paid for MS's copy-protection.
And I have a field day reaming the likes of you, who would apologize for
MS formatting legimate users computers!

I can't believe some of the people that have MVP behind their names.
I have noticed that a majority of the answers given are just cut and
pasted whether they refer to the question asked by the OP or not.

Like all groups of people, it a Bell Curve. The majority of the people are
average. While there is a minority of people at both ends, some being
horrible, and the people at the other end are really beyond great. Carey
would fall into the group of being horrible.

yes, this suggestion would be the ideal strategy to ensure
M$'s final demise, as well as giving Linux the last boost
needed for it to dominate the average desktop.

Mr. Frisch, this insightful suggestion clearly shows you have the skills
and attitude necessary to succeed as a Microsoft senior product manager!
Please apply asap, as I understand Barry Goffe's early retirement
has left a choice vacancy!

What's to wonder? Simply buy legitimate licenses. See how simple

Simple answers come from simple people. There is nothing simple when it
comes to Global Network Security, and having a whole sh*tload of zombie
computers in Asia. Mr. Goffe was correct that keeping every pirated copy
safe is more important to the world as a world the Microsoft's "revenue
issue."

"[Y]your final demise." The MS virtual version of the "final solution?"

Carey speaks the language of MS, IOWs, MS's words are never wrong, and are
to be followed whether it pertains to life or death. Carey is a good
micro-soldier, and will wage war on any country if Gates tolls him to do so.
