XP professional upgrade from Windows 98 SE

During last step of upgrade ("Finishing Installation") PC
re-boots and disables the monitor. The monitor still has
power, but status light is yellow. Can hear the drive
working for a few moments in the beginning...but can't
tell what is happening. Any info would be helpful!

Turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key just as soon as the
first information of any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping until
the Windows Startup Menu appears and then choose Safe Mode from the
menu.

Make note of any and all error messages or comments that come up
during this process. If it starts up successfully then shut down and
let it restart normally.

Post the results back here if there are still ongoing problems.
