Sorry, your idea does not work on XP. I have tried all the
regular means and still nothing. There was an article
about other OS's on the web, but nothing for XP. Microsoft
seems to like keeping secrets.

It works on my WinXP PC sort of.

Set the number of days to keep to 0 and click clear history. Note that for
some strange reason it doesn't always appear to clear the history list
immediatly. Sometimes it does, sometimes it takes a restart, sometimes it
seems to do it at midnight... or oh heck I can't figure it out what rules it
uses to work out when to actually clear the history list , but it does it
eventually.

It works perfectly fine. You obviously have a problem and I'll bet it is
caused by your virus program. Symantics is wrong.
