For some reason my 80 GB hard drive went from 12 GB used
to 78 and then back to 8 and now to 47. I have scanned for
viruses and none were found. I defragmented and it shows
tons of GB that are fragmented but can't fix it. Any ideas?

Could be any number of things:
Large System REstore DAtabase
Large DMP files in c:\windows
A Hibernate file has been created
Large number of files in Temp Internet Files.
Run Disk Cleanup to remove these files.
