My computer is a Gateway Performance 550 with a 56K PCI
Voice Modem SF-1156IV R9A. I used to use Windows 98 (2nd
Ed.). This spring I upgraded to Windows XP Home
Edition. I have been experiencing a recurring problem
that has gone from random occurance to just about every
new session in Windows XP. The modem goes offline and I
have to uninstall and reinstall the modem to make it
work. I have already worked with the Gateway techs and
tried moving the modem to a new slot. It did not solve
the problem. I have reloaded the software (which is the
latest driver for the modem) and it works only for a
short time. What can I do further to try to maintain
modem connectivity and not have to reinstall the hardware
each new session? Please help me!

When you loaded the latest driver for the modem did it say that it is XP
compatible? Sounds like a driver problem.

Here's an answer you probably don't want to hear: buy a modem you
know will be compatable with XP. Many modems aren't and often exhibit
the symptoms you describe.
