I am having a problem with my Audigy sound card which the technician says
requires adding a new user and deleting the old one under which I installed
the software for the card.

I don't want to reinstall all of my apps and try to get the related
parameters set correctly; it took 40 hours to do that when I had a system
crash and needed to start from scratch.

How do I duplicate all of the old user stuff to the new user account? I
tried using the COPY TO USER feature but very few of the old users files got
into the new user. Is it sufficient to manually copy the remaining folders
for the old user under Documents and Settings; that is, the Favorites, Start
Menu and My Documents folder?

If you need a new account to correct the Audigy software install (I
think the tech is taking the easy way out) and then copy the old account
to it, you would end up where you started?

In regards to your specific questions, if you are just copying shortcuts
(start menu and Favorites), there should be no problem. For My Documents
(and the other "My..." folders it houses), safest bet may be to copy the
*contents* of these folders to the new ones instead of the folders
themselves.

If you may run into permissions trouble when trying to access some files
since the new account has different security credentials than the old
account. If this happens, "take ownership" of the files. See WinXP's
Help and Support for more info on that topic.

You may run into a program or two that won't run in the new account
since it wasn't installed while logged on with it. You'll need to work
out those situations on a one-by-one basis. Each program may have
different methods for transferring data or getting the program to run
under the new account.
