Any suggestions for troubleshooting burning CDs in HP CD-Writer 8200 in Win XP with RecordNow

Hi there,

I am having problems burning audio CDs with my HP Cd-writer 8200 -
I'm running Windows XP and am using HP RecordNow. I can record data
discs fine, it is just audio CDs that refuse to complete the writing
process. RecordNow will get 50% of the way through the disc and then
come up with an "error writing disc" message and abort the operation.
If I look at the disc, it is only partially burnt (indicated by the
color variation between the burnt portion and unburnt portion).

Its clearly not a hardware issue since I can burn data discs, so I
am curious if there are any known problems with RecordNow, WinXP, and
HP 8200 series with audio burning. Is it possible that the drive is
trying to pull data faster than my computer is reading off the hard
drive (due to other processes or fragmentation). Any other
suggestions for how this may be fixed? Is there better audio
recording software out there?

This is what I have and use with great success. You may have tried these so
sorry if I'm wasting time. But look at and try...
-Options>General tab--Are you set up to be notified to close all other apps
?
-Options>Advanced tab--
--Burn at the slowest speed-4X. Takes longer but higher quality
--Checkmark lossless linking and operations test
-Options>CDDB tab
--I set mine to prompt before downloading. Honestly unsure what this is so
I set it this way. So far, no problems...

Also look at the Veritas website(the burner's manufacturer). May have
answers.

One possibility is that you are recording at a rate higher than the CD-RW or
the target media can handle. Another, if you are doing a disk-to-disk copy,
is that the two CD drives are competing with each other for bandwidth on the
same IDE channel (which is why some burning software will issue a warning
and suggest copying to the image to the HD before writing to the destination
CD). Another is that your system may be running an application that is
demanding enough system resources that the burn process gets interrupted.
Another is that your source media has a big ol' goober on it, but software
usually reports a read error in that situation.

Provided the CD-RW is not sharing the same IDE channel and you are not
exceeding the recording rate of the CD-RW or the media, and barring the
other things I already babbled about, you "shouldn't" be experiencing
difficulties.

Try burning at a lower rate. Instead of 48x, try 40x.

I haven't had any problems with Nero, if you're looking for an alternative
piece of software. www.nero.com It provides some pretty good protection
against buffer underruns.

The other answers I like. ie burn at a lower speed. Audio disks sound
way better if burned at a really low speed anyway so go for it.

My answer last night failed to post. I use this with great success. I set
mine up as described below...

In RecordNow, click on the options button under the logo.
General tab-mark "Remind me to shut down other applications..." Others
should be by your choosing.
Advanced tab-Use slowest recording speed; I use 4x. Longer time but I have
great results. I also marked Lossless linking and operation test.
CDDB tab-I marked prompt. Honestly unsure what this is.

My local broadcasting studio/station never burns faster than at ×2 speed, so
I have been reliably informed.

If you are trying to burn MP3 files then burn them as data which allows
you to put more on a CD. It has always worked fine for me.

Yep, I always burn audio at 4x using high-quality CDs. I have also sold a bunch
to a local customer who captures the audio from old 33's and burns CDs. He does
the same sort of slow burn... Ben Myers
