View Full Version : Trying to update BIOS - can't create boot disc.

I have installed an OEM version of XP, along with a new hard
drive and extra memory on my homebrew PC, replacing Win 98 and a dead hard
drive. I have a LEX BN780 ULTRA motherboard with a 1.3 GHz Athlon fitted.
The LEX manual says
a) the BIOS doesn't support XP (though it works) and
b) 1.3 GHz is the fastest processor supported,
so I wish to update the BIOS. I've never done this before and I'm not
really sure what I'm doing. I have found the LEX website and there are 3
updates available covering XP, and supporting up to 2GHz. So I tried.
Following the instructions in the manual, I fall at the first
hurdle, which is to create a boot disc to which to copy AWDFLASH.exe and
download the update(s). XP doesn't let you create boot discs, it seems.
Typing SYS A: at the CMD prompt gets an invalid command message (O how I
miss the DOS days). I have found instructions to create a pack of 6 setup
floppies, but that's not what I want, is it? (or is it?).
Even if someone can tell me how to make a boot disc, do I
download and install just the latest update (which seems logical to me) or
all 3? Or should I stop overreaching myself and buy a new motherboard and
processor? I don't want to do that 'cos it's giving in!
Can anybody help, please? Brian W

Put a floppy in the a drive. Open "My Computer" Right click on the a drive;
choose format from the menu, then make sure you check "create an MS-Dos
startup disk". All done. Then copy the new bios file to the floppy and the
setup program from your mainboard maker.

Beware: make sure you know what you are doing. If this BIOS upgrade
procedure goes wrong in anyway, there is a chance you will render your
computer inoperable.
