I am interested in buying one of the subject products to use as a
backup device. Does anyone know how well they perform? I want to use it with
firewire.

Jim,
I have a 80 GB Maxtor Personal Storage USB Hard drive. The drive is
simply a Maxtor 80 GB HDD in a case with supplied software that allows one
button backup. I do not use the software for the backup but the drive
performs great as a portable hard drive that I can transport between work
and home.
The only problem I have with the drive is the power supply. It has a
connector similar to a S-Video connector on the back of the drive and it
does not stay plugged into the drive if you move the drive. This is a
concern since the drive's data can become corrupted during a write if the
power is unplugged.
I also think the power supply box is a little bulky for traveling from place
to place. The PS box has a connector that takes a standard PC power cable
end which is convenient since I only have to travel with the PS box and the
hard drive.
