Search Companion - reinstalling

.. Locate the file "srchasst.inf"
(You may have to adjust Explorer Folder Options>View tab
to Show hidden files and folders)
.. Or you can click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%
\inf to open directly to the inf folder
The default location is C:\Windows\Inf\srchasst.inf
.. Once you locate the file, right click and click
install.
.. Browse to the "I386" folder on your XP CD.

The error "A file that is required to run Search Companion
cannot be found. You may need to run setup" usually
indicates that either BAR.XSL or BALLOON.XSL are missing
or corrupt.Reinstalling Srchasst.inf usually works in this
case.

Before you do this, just empty your temporary internet
cache.

That procedure is the one I got from the KB article. It does not work which
is why I came to this site for help. In any case I tried it again. The
install messages are incorrect. It asks to put the SP 1 disk in after
getting some files off the XP Install CD. However, the files it asks for are
not on the SP 11 CD. I found them in the c:\windows\$NTxxxxx set up files
that are stored when first installing XP.

The Search Assistant used to work but somewhere along the way after
installing XP updates and doing other installs it got wiped out. Since I
don't use the Search Assistant very often, I have no way to determine when
it quit working.

When asked for the SP1 files, point Windows towards the
\ServicePackFiles folder.

If you point it to the \$NTxxxx folder, those are copies of the files
that were replaced by hotfixes that include an uninstall routine.
They're not the SP1 files that the INF is looking for.

Pointing to that folder did not make any difference. I still get the Search
Companion error.

Nicholas,
Did you try Doug Knox's fix for search? See his page here:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_search_probs.htm that describes some
common problems with Search that crop up. He has a downloadable fix for one
particular situation.
