Windows XP display problems

Hi,
I was helping my manager out with an email problem/users
problem today when, after making the new user and logging
into the new user The display setting changed. Now we
havent been able to get to the settings part of the display
without the system erroring out and rebooting. Booting
into safe mode has allowed us to go to the settings tab
but now the computer doesnt recognize the laptop's
monitor. Please help.
