Does anyone know of a software program (freeware, hopefully) that can format CD's or DVD's ??
I have tried to locate on the internet, but was unable to find any.
I have been using Easy CD Creator and it takes up to 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours.
Also, isn't it better to "Format" the CD rather than "Erase" it ?? --
Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

You cannot format nor erase CD-Rs and DVD-Rs only RWs. I use Roxio but it depends on what you have installed on your PC. For me to format a CD-RW using Roxio, it takes only about 25 to 30 minutes. It may have to do a lot with the writespeed of your CD/D
VD writer.

Why can't you format CD-R's?

What's the point? Formatting a CD makes it useable for packet writing, which
(AFAIK) you can't do with a CD-R, only with a CD-RW

I don't have a DVD burner, but I do have a burner for CD-RWs and CD-Rs. One
factor that can slow down the burn speed is a low burn capability built into
your blank disks. So check you blank disk burn capability. Is it 4X, 10X,
etc.? If you try to burn a 4X disk at 10X, you'll just end up with a
coaster. Another factor that can significantly speed up a burn is if you
have 2 CD drives, one regular drive for the master and another burner drive
for the blank disk. If you only have one drive (just the burner) then an
IMAGE of the master must be written temporarily to your hard drive before
the blank disk can be burned, and that process takes quite a while.
Formatting a CD, IMO, is a waste of time. I have INCD for that purpose, but
rarely use it any more.
For burner software, I prefer NERO.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Yes, I am referring to CD-RW and DVD_RW

I guess it's just the only way to format a disk.
And, I know that freshly opened CD's don't require formatting... (depending on what mood my pc is in.

Actually, no CD requires formatting unless you decide to go that route. IMO
the philosophy of making a CD disk work the same way as a floppy or a hard
drive is a needless endeavor. Forget formatting.

Well AFAIK you can't drag and drop files to and from a CDRW UNLESS you
format it for packet writing first.

You arsed fùçktard! "AFAIK" shouldn't even be mentioned. It is a FACT that
one needs packet writing software to do such a thing, and isn't something
knowing from afar, you dìck!

Wow, where is all this anger coming from? I thought we were having an adult
discussion. Guess not.

Direct CD (now called Drag to Disk by Roxio) can indeed format CD-R and
DVD+/-R media. However the media can not be erased. Other packet writing
software such as InCD can only format RW media.

I am also asking about the ' RW ' as an ability to reformat the CD/DVD so it
can be "cleared", and used again --- as with VHS and sound cassettes.

There's a difference between formatting and erasing. Formatting will
erase the disk, but erasing will not format it.

Thanks to EVERYONE for their replies. I think I understand now how I was
referring to "erasing" and "formatting"... I think I have been choosing the
"erasing CD or DVD" because it was faster than doing a "full formatting".
Let me try some of these read/write programs and clear off some of these
disks and try again.
Thanks guys ... ;)
