The first thing you should know is that you should never
keep files on your desktop. The desktop is loaded at
startup and that includes all programs and files that you
have placed on your desktop. This causes wasted CPU time
and system resources. The only thing that should be on
your desktop are shortcuts. I can't help you with your
question as I simply don't understand what you are asking.
If you want to look for a file use the search under your
start button and click the find all files and folders
choice. If you want all doc files then use a wild card
like this *.doc and that should do it. If you then want
a direct link to the file on your desktop then right click
the file and click create shortcut and if it isn't
automatically placed on your desktop then drag and drop it
there. Good luck.

No, putting files on the desktop may or may not be a good idea,
but it doesn't waste anything.

There are no "shoulds" in what or what not to put on your
desktop. Like you, I prefer to have only shortcuts on my desktop,
but that's a preference, not a rule. Each person should decide
for himself what he wants to have there.
