I've recently installed XP Pro on to my Win98 system, and
I'm using a dual-boot with Win98 on one partition and XP
on another. My motherboard has CMedia AC97 audio
capabilities, plus I have a Terratec EWX 24/96 PCI sound
card installed. All of this hardware works and co-exists
fine when I boot into Win98.
However when I use XP i get no sound. "Sounds And Audio
Devices" in Control Panel shows both cards installed
properly, and there are no bad (red or yellow) symbols
beside them in Device Manager. However upon closer
inspection one of the pages in "Sounds And Audio Devices"
says "Status: Driver is enabled but has not been
started.". This is the same for both sound cards. None of
the sound cards appears in the drop-down list of "Audio -
> Default Playback Device", which is greyed out as there
are no active sound cards.
I'm completely stumped on this, I literally have no clue.
A few people seem to have posted this problem in the
group before but I couldn't find a useful reply anywhere.
Maybe nobody in the entire world knows how to fix this!
I'm also going to include a bit of tech info about my
system to help you think (!)...
Socket A Mainboard with SiS 735 chipset and AMD Duron
1GHz processor. nVidia RIVA TNT2 model 64 AGP graphics
card (IRQ 5). Realtek RTL8139 Fast Ethernet PCI Card
(IRQ 11). Terratec AudioSystem EWX 24/96 PCI Sound Card
(IRQ 5). C-Media AC97 Audio Device (IRQ 11).
The computer is ACPI enabled, and Plug and Play is
enabled in the BIOS.
I thought maybe the fact that the IRQ's are the same for
some of the devices might be a problem, but I was advised
against changing these unless I know exactly what I'm
doing (which I don't!).
Anyway, thanks for even reading this far. I'm so damn
frustrated at this problem, and I'm so grateful for ANY
help and advice,
cheers,
Dan
