why on gods green earth cant i set global preferences for
my HP printer(home use, one user, me!)such that it
defaults to draft/black & white, quality. it is absurd to
have to constantly change it from normal/color default
mode. is this machevellian"esque" conspiracy with HP? or
MS? or both?! to sell more ink cartridges! i need answers
before i devote the rest of my life to exposing this
multi-gazillion dollar scam. please help, for the love
god (and the kids, you see, i volunteer 100hrs a week
working with blind, mentally challenged, hearing impaired,
orphan childrens from many, many of the poorest 4th world
countries. i would, however, give up that noble endeavor,
to expose this inkinjustice. really. so help me someone,
i beg you. if not for me, then for the childrens.)

You say the *children* are mentally challenged? Your issue
is with the printer driver, which is the responsibility
of the printer manufacturer; it has nothing to do with
the operating system. There was a chance that you might
have gotten some help anyway, but you didn't think it
important, apparently, or you would have mentioned the
model number of the printer.
riiight. thanks though. am i detecting a little nick
burns there plethora? so it is HP! print chauffer, print
butler, whatever, is there something that can be done.
(HP Model officejet r40xi). and yes, i am computer
challenged at times. i am not really a conspiracy
theorist, however, this "oversight" in the drivers has a
funny smell...i shall query HP for an answer, thanks
again for taking the time to post a reply plethora.

Sometimes the printer driver will include an option to
define a default "profile" which might include such options
as paper size, print quality, orientation, etc. I don't
know if yours does or not, but you might want to check it
out.

You should be able to setup a default profile.... read the printer manual.
Each printer is different so there is no 'generic' way.
