View Full Version : How 2 bypass XP Logons
Gary P.

I'm an XP newbie. Somehow, I must have setup some kind of
an 'auto logon'. Immediately upon booting into XP, it
tries to do an XP logon with an ID and passwword. An
error message appears on top of the logon window saying
Wimdows could not log you on.
Where the heck do I go to delete that? Also, I'd also
like to get rid of the Admin logon. Heck, I just want it
to bootup with no logons at all.
Thanks for reading/answering what's probably a very stupid
problem!

Any idea about how you may have setup that up? Maybe with TweakUI or
Control Panel? Also, are you using Pro or Home? Can you get to Safe Mode
okay?

It's Home Edition. I think I got into a Network setup
wizard... bummer.
Safe mode is good idea. I'll try. Thanks.

Go to Start / Run, type: control userpasswords and press OK. At the top
of that dialog box, remove the check mark and press Apply. Enter your
password/confirm and press OK.

Let us know how it goes, Gary.
Some FYI for you:
Going right to the desktop is the default behavior for XP when there is
only one user (with no password or autologon setup) *and* the system
created administrator account.
A recent update (asp.NET) adds a new user so you get stopped at the
Welcome screen. Getting autologon back is "do-able." Using the command
"control userpasswords2" and the process that Ronnie has described in
his response in this thread. Don't do this yet....
However, you're saying that your logon is being refused. That's a little
different than the situation we usually see here in the newsgroups where
just a local machine or small home LAN is involved.
Once in Safe Mode, you should be able to reset your account's password.
Use the same Start> Run> control userpasswords2 to do that. There is a
Reset Password button on that screen. Log off and log back on to confirm
that the account is able to logon correctly.
Once you can log off/log on successfully, address the autologon portion
of the problem. Now's the time to try Ronnie's suggestion.
While working with XP, remember that any account change takes place at
the next logon. That little detail can trip you up in the oddest
circumstances. I don't know that this is what happened here but keep
this tidbit tucked in the back of your mind for future reference.
If you're still stuck, post back with what user accounts are on the
machine. What user group they belong to. Anything you can remember from
running the network wizard (a response you gave that you weren't sure
about, for example). And then we'll give your problem another go.
Good luck!
