when i start my computer,
before windows completes its opening dance,
the screen displays two users,
one user account as administrator and my standard
user account.

i rarely ever use the administrator account except to manage my system.

that being said,
there is a
message under my standard user account name
that says there are 8 unread mail messages.

i cannot find these messages.
anywhere for the life of me!

can someone please
direct me as to how i may access these messages.
they showed u[p yesterday, saturday 14th june.

i recently changed my ISP.

did this contribute to my problem?

i use outlook express 6.0 as my e mail reader

thank you in advance,
rjlafayette

Hi Robert

It is a known problem,

Download and install TweakUI for XP
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

It has an option to turn it off

Tweak UI is a useless program that only does what you can
do yourself with a little XP education. In the case of you
unread mail message notice you can navigate to the key in
the registry that will fix this which is what Tweak User
Interface does. Learning a little about the registry goes
a long way to saving HDD space by not installing programs
that do little or nothing. Here is the route. go>start\run
and type in regedit and click ok. Now navigate this route
by clicking the + signs beside the following
entries.HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windo ws\Curret
nVersion\UnreadMail. Now to clear the number of displayed
mail messages you simply double click MessageExpiryDays
and then modify and change it to 0 and then click a blank
area of the screen to set. If, like me, you don't care
about the unread mail message notice and what to eliminate
it from showing up then you right click on UnreadMail and
then click permission and highlighting each account one at
a time you can set the permission to deny. Or if the other
accounts like the notice you can leave theirs alone and
just change your account. Close out of the registry editor
and you are done. As for any mail you may or may not have
on your system you only have to check your accounts to
see. If you have checked your accounts and cleared all
mail then chances are this is a glitch that occassionaly
occurs. Good luck.

wow a very inclusive answer. i may take your advice, yet am a bit afraid
aboutdoing more than i am really qualified fto do as far as certain
registry's are concerned.

but will give it a go and uninstall power toy, and keep it in background for
a
plan 'b'.

Nonsense. TweakUI is a very useful special-purpose registry
editor. It can't do all registry edits, but it does many
commonly-desired edits. What it can do, it does it much more
easily and safely than using regedit.

I recommend it highly.

I agree with Ken Blake. Why fumble around with the Registry when the Tweak
Program will do for you what you want.

I agree, you shouldn't really go into the registry unless you know what you
are doing....
What's wrong with a "small" program that can fix these little bugs out for
you.

Even if you're an expert, it's always possible to make a mistake.
Regedit makes changes without first prompting you to save or not,
and makes no automatic backups. It requires great care to be sure
you don't screw something up, and once in a while even the most
experienced person does it wrong.

It's just foolhardy not to take advantage of an easier safer way
like TweakUI to do something when you can. I'll use regedit when
I have to (TweakUI doesn't do everything), but TweakUI whenever I
can.
