View Full Version : C drive opening with Search

December 5th 03, 01:25 AM
When I doubble left click my mouse on my hard drives C or
D or other drives under My Computer like Drive E (CD-RW)
etc., it gives me the Windows "Search" option instead of
opening the Drive.

If I right click with the mouse, the top choice is Search
followed by Open (which will open the drives when clicked
on) followed by Open with Explorer, followed by Open with
Ulead Photo Explorer and then by the "usual" list of
choices under Sharing and Security.

What can I do to restore opening these drives with a
doubble left click of the mouse instead of getting the
Search Results (or Search) window?

Help!

Thanks to anyone who can answer this question.

Requires a registry edit.
Locate the 'default' value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
Click modify on the edit menu
type NONE in the file data box and then click OK.
Exit regedit.

Actually, that's what the script I wrote does. Additionally, some users can
just use REGSVR32 /I SHELL32.DLL and accomplish the same thing.

True, but one must learn how to edit the registry.

....in the 'Basics' NG... think again. A wrong editing of the Registry =
can render a PC unbootable - or I am in the wrong again? In one of the =
4 available MS Registry NGs, yes.

Hardly anyone needs to learn to edit the registry. In fact for
the great majority of computer users, who are in interested in
the computer's working with the least-possible amount of fuss,
learning to edit the registry is worse than unnecessary--it's
downright dangerous and is a prescription for getting into
trouble.

If the question was about opening drives rather than folders (I think it
was), he could just do this. No registry editing needed.

On your desktop, right click and create a new shortcut. In the location
field cut and paste this line:

%systemroot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\

"User Name" would be the name of the user--whether it be a personal name or
Administrator. Or you can choose not to open under a certain User Name by
deleting "User Name/" from the line above.

After you give this shortcut a name--mine is called C-drive Documents--then
you can drag your shortcut to your taskbar or copy it to your taskbar. Then
whenever you click this shortcut, your C drive will always open.

If you want to open a specific folder in the C drive, like My Documents,
type this:

%systemroot%\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My
Documents

Try removing the /n, or /e, to see the difference in commands.

The same thing can happen to the Drives setting in the Registry as for the
Folders entry.

The problem can occur when the Default value in:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

is removed and replaced with nothing. If this happens, then Explorer
defaults to the first sub entry it finds, usually Search, but it can also
happen if you manually add the Command Prompt Here context menu item.

The script I wrote corrects both of the above settings, just in case.
