View Full Version : remote desktop/assistance

My brother (who is not interested in reading newsgroups), asks where to get
detailed or step-by-step instructions to set up either remote assistance or
some kind of remote desktop between our machines. He's got a WinXPhome, I've
got W98E. Where both on cable, so speed is not a big issue..

TIA

Since you have Win98, Remote Assistance/Remote Desktop doesn't exist for
you, as it does in XP machines. However, you can still use NetMeeting's
Application Sharing feature to do what you wish. For your brother,
NetMeeting is installed on XP, its just not obvious that it is. He needs to
click Start, Run and enter CONF.EXE to start the setup wizard.

I see I need to make a correction. You could remote into his machine, but
not vice-versa, without NetMeeting or other software.

As a PC-support person (even though ex-, and XP is unknown for me), I'm the
one who needs to get into his machine sometimes...(file transfers would of
course also be nice to have).

Step-by-step somewhere??
(We were explicitly forbidden using remote control software at ex-workplace
(government))

You need to download the Remote Desktop Client,
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp and install
it on your 98 machine.

On the XP machine, your brother needs to go to Control Panel, System, Remote
tab and enable Allow users to connect remotely to this computer. You will
need an account on the XP machine, with a password, or you can use his
account. However, in either case the account must have a password.

To connect to his computer, you need to know his IP address. Just start
the Remote Desktop Client on the 98 machine and enter the IP address. As
long as you can connect to his computer, you'll get a logon dialog for XP.
Log on, and its just like you're there.

If your brother's computer is behind a router, you need to allow port 3389
through and forward it to the destination machine's (your brother's PC) LAN
address.

See http://www.remotenetworktechnology.com/ for more information on this
topic (site appears to be down right now).
