View Full Version : Need to retrieve files after reinstalling windows XP Home

Pam
July 13th 04, 01:31 AM
Hi,
I would appreciate any help I can get with my problem.
Last week I got the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. I
tried and tried to re-boot and kept getting a blue screen.
Yesterday I tried again. I changed my settings to boot
from CD and inserted my Home Edition CD and it
reinstalled XP Home on my hard drive. Problem is now I
cannot find any of my files that were on my hard drive.
I built the computer myself, so there were no other
windows programs on my drive. All I did was reinstall
the Windows XP Home and now cannot locate all my files
and programs. I have done a search on my C drive but to
no avail.
Any suggestions on how to retrieve these files?
Thank you so very much, in advance.
Pam

Did you do a clean reinstall or a repair? Sounds like you
formatted and did a clean install. Odds are that many of
your files are over-written and gone. But STOP using the
drive for anything. Use another computer to do a Google for
"file recovery" and you may be able to find some freeware
that can recover your files.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for your quick reply. I chose to repair, but when I did that, it seemed to do a complete re-install. I only changed my Bios to boot from CD and then restarted my computer. I had to push any key to boot from CD. After that I had to do the license
thing and then chose to Repair the files on my computer. When I hit enter, it ran an installation. I thought it was just repairing, but apparently not as I got an entirely new registration and everything at the end. My computer is now booting up just f
ine, I just can't find my files.
Thanks so much.

Thank you Jim,
I will give that a try and see what I can come up with.
I have all the software for my programs and such, but I didn't want to fill my hard drive with things that are already there, if you know what I mean.
Some of this stuff I am very good at, while there are other things I still just don't get.
Thanks so much again.

Good luck with the recovery. If you don't care about the
data files, meaning your life and job don't depend on the
files, just use the management console (right click my
computer and select manage, then the storage/disk management
item and check the drive for size, partitions and such. If
all appears OK, just reinstall your applications and be
careful in the future.

A repair install should have kept all programs and personal files in tact. A
repair install only repairs xp. Did you look under the c:\documents and
settings folder for your old user?

Good luck with the recovery. If you don't care about the
data files, meaning your life and job don't depend on the
files, just use the management console (right click my
computer and select manage, then the storage/disk management
item and check the drive for size, partitions and such. If
all appears OK, just reinstall your applications and be
careful in the future.

| Thank you Jim,
| I will give that a try and see what I can come up with.
| I have all the software for my programs and such, but I
didn't want to fill my hard drive with things that are
already there, if you know what I mean.
| Some of this stuff I am very good at, while there are
other things I still just don't get.
| Thanks so much again.
