View Full Version : Apps not on Start after installation of XP

I recently finished installing XP over the existing
Windows 98 (thanks Bruce, it wasn't as straightforward as
I would have liked, but your advice worked).
Unfortunately, the installation didn't ask me whether it
was an 'upgrade' or 'new installation' - so I assume that
it went ahead and performed a new installation over the
old Windows 98.

Now, none of my applications that were on the Windows 98
Start Menu are on the XP Start Menu. However, I see that
there still is a C:\Windows\Start Menu folder showing all
of the applications.

Is there some way to get the new installation of XP to
somehow 'read' the old Start Menu and 'reattach' the
existing applications? Same goes for my e-mail settings
and address books.

Thanks for your help.
Rick

For the first, Copy and Paste the existing links from C:\Windows\Start Menu
to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Start Menu.

Or if you want the shortcuts to appear on all users, simply substitute
username for All Users.

For email settings, use Outlook's Import Wizard.

One useful thing: Always backup stuff prior to upgrading or installing new
programs and software. In this case, it would've been helpful to have a
backup of your settings and address book.

Thanks Agustin -

Unfortunately, only the Start Menu folders are there -
the links have been wiped out. So - I pasted the folders
into the All Users Start Menu, and am now tracking down
the .exe files for each program and creating new links.
Once I add the shortcut to the Start Menu folder things
seem to work OK. What a pain!!

Also, I'm having a bit of a problem with the Import
Wizard, but I'll keep working on it.

Thanks again,
Rick

It might be quicker to just reinstall our apps from CDs,
that will set the shortcuts and menus.
