slow startup

I just purchased a HP pavilion a600y with XP home installed. It is the
slowest thing that I had ever had. My Win98se is slow but not this slow.
The HP does have a lot of programs that I have no idea what they are. Is
there any help out their.

Go into the programs options that you don't want to start and set them to
not start on boot up. Or use msconfig to disable things on start up. Or
uninstall programs you aern't going to use.
Also scan for spyware.
And, how much memory do you have. XP likes 256mb or more.(more is better)
