No messages or anything at all... just the blue screen,
almost as if it is still loading. so earlier today i left
it on for a couple hours, but when i returned i was still
athte startup screen

Try doing a Repair Install:

For a step by step walk through of a
Windows XP Repair Install, including screenshots, go to:

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

When the page opens, scroll down and click on: How To Run A Repair
Install.

This happened to me when I changed the IDE bus master driver from the VIA
driver to the Standard Dual Channel driver. Turned out the Standard driver
didn't like the slave drive on the secondary IDE. So it did as you said,
just sat at the start up screen like it was loading but was so slow it would
never get past that even after a couple hours. I finally figured it out
when I saw the WinXP boot CD choke on that drive as I was trying to get to
recovery console. So I just disconnected the secondary slave drive,
restarted, XP loaded fine, I rolled the driver back to the VIA, reconnected
the drive and all was good.
